Credited with introducing the West to Chinese cuisine as haute cuisine, Yan-Kit So inspired generations of people who love Chinese food. Born in Chung-shan, China, she was raised and educated in Hong Kong and London, where she completed her PhD in African and Oriental Studies.
After a brief period of teaching in Hong Kong, she returned to London, where she met and married an American academic. In the United States, she honed and perfected her skills in preparing classic Chinese cuisine, much to the delight of fellow academics and students. In 1984 she published Yan-Kit's Classic Chinese Cookbook, which gained immediate - and enduring - acclaim. She died in London in 2001.
