Bangok Local

In 2014 Sareen & Jean, left their highly successful careers in advertising and tax accounting to open a quirky tiny breakfast cafe/dinner venue in Elgin St Carlton – Nora

Despite seating only 20, Nora went on to become one of Melbourne’s most innovative and challenging eating venues channeling New Nordic, Nouvelle Cuisine & modernist sensibilities and technique yet firmly grounded in and true to Thai home cookery.

Drawing on their childhood memories of Thai cooking to deliver Thai flavours and ideas; just not as you knew them; Sareen and Jean, as chef and baker, developed a cult like following and critical regard despite their lack of professional culinary training.

Sadly Nora closed at the end of 2017 and our loss is Bangkok’s gain.

In 2018, Sareen & Jean returned to their first home, Bangkok to re-immerse themselves in Thai food and have now written and photographed, as locals, a gorgeous authentic book on daily eating – Bangkok Local

About the Book

Bangkok Local is an interesting selection of recipes not always seen in cookbooks, that will reward a curious cook or diner.  Even if you are a novice to cooking Thai  food, Bangkok Local will have you cooking and eating like a local in no time!

Think ginger-laden pork meatballs in a bowl of jok, eaten in a peaceful park watching people practice their morning tai chi; or fragrant pad kaphrao in the middle of a bustling market at midday; or tom yum goon and jungle curry eaten at midnight after watching the sunset from a rooftop bar, washed down with beer and good conversation.

We particularly love the Son in Law Eggs, the many early morning recipes and the Thai sweets and desserts.

FAQs
Can I buy/pre-order Bangkok Local?

Yes copies will be available for signing and purchase on the night – $39.95.  If you can’t attend we can organise to post signed copies to you.  Postage (tracked & insured): Victoria $7.95; Australia wide $9.95; overseas we’ll quote.

I’ve already purchased the book – can I bring it to be signed?

Well…to be honest…we’d rather you didn’t…we do these events to sell books. We subsidise our events by the sale of books on the night. We would prefer not to have to increase our event fee. If you did want to bring a book along for signing, please consider buying a book in-store on the night to support our events.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

As this is a licenced venue and alcohol will be served, attendees must be 18+ or accompanied by a parent/guardian

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

If you have been to one of our events before, please note we have moved to the northern side of the Queen Victoria Market.  Our new address is 115-121 Victoria Street (next to A Shed)

We recommend public transport.

The 19, 20, 57 (Elizabeth St)and 55 (William & Peel St) trams go past the Queen Victoria Market and run frequently.  We are in the Free Tram Zone and are a short 50m walk from the Elizabeth St Queen Victoria Market stop and the Peel St Queen Victoria Market stop.  Melbourne Central and Flagstaff railway stations are two blocks away.

If driving, there is plenty of metered parking on Queen St near the corner of Victoria St.  There is also limited parking on Victoria Street outside the store.

 Is my registration/ticket transferable?

Yes – to another person – just have them present your ticket on the evening.

What is the refund policy?

Tickets are not refundable.
