The Tivoli Road Baker by Michael & Pippa James is a beautiful and long overdue cookbook from one of Melbourne’s best bakers and cafes (and best kept secrets!)  – The Tivoli Road Bakery

If you haven’t had their organic stone ground artisanal sourdough breads, or their lamington doughnuts, or their sausage rolls & pies, eccles cakes, cornish pasties etc….. you are in for a treat!

The book shares the secrets of some of Tivoli Road’s best-loved creations. The treats that Melburnians cross town for are all there.  Pork and fennel sausage rolls, doughnuts, palmiers, tarts, scones, galettes, canelés, salads and a groaning buffet of remarkable sandwiches are just the start.

Novice bakers will find the chapters on bakers’ basics and the keys to a good larder extremely useful.  Traditional bakers will love the traditional Cornish pasties, saffron buns and Eccles cakes.

Readers will also meet Michael and Pippa’s  growers and suppliers that they credit as fundamental to the success of their bakery. They also explore the native ingredients that are becoming more accessible and widely used, as well as ways to incorporate them into modern baking.

About the Authors

Tivoli Road Bakery is the culmination of years of hospitality experience for Michael and Pippa James.

Michael grew up in Penzance in West Cornwall in the UK. After completing his chef’s training he moved to London to work for Tom Aikens’ two Michelin Star Pied à Terre. It was here, over the pass and in the throes of service, he met Pippa. At the Villandry food store and Isola in London, he realised that his true love (Pippa aside) was the fine detail of pastry work and baking bread.

Eight years later, Michael and Pippa moved to Sydney where Michael worked at the renowned Bourke St Bakery in Sydney.  Michael  then worked at Melbourne artisanal baker Baker D Chirico whilst Pippa held senior positions at  Vue de monde and Cutler & Co. Michael then moved to MoVida Aqui as head pastry chef/baker before opening the MoVida Bakery in April 2012. Just over a year later Pippa and Michael purchased the bakery and renamed it ‘The Tivoli Road Bakery’.

Tivoli Road Bakery is a labour of love.  Pippa handles the bakery administration, wholesale and development as well as buzzing around the shop floor and doing the early starts for Farmers markets.  This lets Michael focus on  baking handmade artisan breads and pastries to the highest standard possible.
