Eat at the Bar by Matt McConnell & Jo Gamvros

Perhaps Melbourne’s best kept (and longer running) secrets is Bar Lourinha; a smallish beautiful intimate bar in Little Collins St at the top end of the CBD.

When you walk in the door at Bar Lourinha  you are instantly transported home – and to a bar somewhere in Portugal or maybe Spain or perhaps Italy.  Somewhere just sort of Mediterraneanish!  At Bar Lourinha, Matt and Jo weave wonderful hospitality with elegantly simple seasonal Iberian/Mediterranean bar food.  Food for talking, eating, thinking, drinking, and living.  And it seems that is what Melbournians love.

Bar Lourinha recently celebrated its tenth birthday (and counting).  What better way to celebrate than to write a book to allow everyone to have a little bit of Bar Lourinha at home…!

Join us on Monday 19th November for the launch of this beautiful new book on the food and hospitality that keeps Melbourne coming back for more.  We’ll be chatting to Matt and Jo about their travels over the years, their views on hospitality and the importance of sharing plates.   And we’d love you to join us!

About the book

Eat at the Bar: recipes inspired by travels in Spain, Portugal, Italy & beyond is the first book from Melbourne restaurateurs Matt McConnell and Jo Gamvros.

The idea for Bar Lourinha came to Matt and his wife Jo when travelling in Spain in 1997.  As Matt says,

“It was a life changing experience. We don’t speak Spanish, but we were walking into bars and being treated with great respect. A welcoming respect that is sometimes missing in service, we find, in Melbourne.”

“We wanted to bring a slice of that back because it was really enjoyable and we were never made to feel like a stranger or outsider. It really typifies a lot of Spanish culture – it’s convivial, warm, giving, and that flows over into the flavours as well.”

Bar Lourinha was an instant success and is one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets. An intimate even though busy space, providing beautiful food and hospitality; all without a lot of fuss.    In 2009 Bar Lourinha, Matt and Jo received the Donleavy Fitzpatrick Award.  Bar Lourinha has consistently received glowing reviews and awards and is currently rated 15/20 in the Good Food Guide.

Please join us for an intimate chat with Matt & Jo as we explore their new book Eat at the Bar.

As alcohol may be served, attendees must be 18+ or accompanied by a parent/guardian.
