AMERICAN WOMAN'S CLUB OF BOMBAY.

Favorite Recipes used by American Woman's Club of Bombay.

Bombay : Mrs Shirley for the American Woman's Club, circa 1936. First and only edition.  Printed by H W Smith at the Times of India Press, Bombay.

Octavo (190x125mm) original quarter bound green cloth, green printed and illustrated boards [6],107,[7]pp.

Gift inscription to front free endpaper " Sheila, I managed to obtain this yesterday evening from an American girlfriend of mine.  I've had many of the dishes whose recipes are in this book - & good they are!!  You may have some difficulty in understanding the "English" but your [negro?] cook will be able to translate it for you I'm sure!! Phil 12.12.36".   Boards lightly sunned to edges; corners gently bruised; a few pages with folded corners and creased; a few marginal pencilled marks; blemish to p.99.

A collection of European and American recipes, attributed to the member donating them.  There are two pages, with four Indian recipes.  Elsewhere there are several Anglo-Indian recipes.   An unusual collection featuring frozen and jellied salads, Southern cooking and traditional American baking occasionally using local ingredients such as 'Chuppati flour'.  Numerous advertisements for local businesses throughout.

Although no charitable purpose is disclosed, Favorite Recipes was presumably published to raise funds for some charity in India.  An example of the insular nature of some international communities during this time.

Scarce.  A nice copy.
