Lady Dudley was a Victorian Scottish noblewoman renowned for her beauty.  A close friend of Queen Alexandra and the Empress Elisabeth ("Sissi"), Lady Dudley was widowed at an early age. In her later years, particularly during the Boer War and World War I, Lady Dudley served with the British Red Cross Society earning the Royal Red Cross Medal.

This was the first of two cookery books authored by the Countess; a companion was released in 1914.  Handsomely published (at 7/6), with some 500 'simple' recipes with quotes interspersed.  The recipes may be mostly uncomplicated but they are elegant and of the highest British Victorian fashion.  Scottish recipes for Black Pudding and Haggis are included.  A chapter on Housekeeper's and Toilet Recipes completes the cookery section.   Unusually it finishes with an three short essays by J H Turner: Food-Evils of Insufficiency, Eating a Duty and Fruits in XIII and XV Centuries.

An excellent and interesting recipe book.
