JONES, Idwal  (1887-1964)

High Bonnet: [a novel of epicurean adventures]

New York : Prentice-Hall, 1945.  First Edition.

Octavo (210x150mm) illustrated dust jacket, burgundy, gilt lettered, cloth boards, deckle edges, [8],184pp. Jacket illustration by Edgard Cirlin.

Dust jacket unclipped, spine lightly sunned and soiled, panels lightly scuffed and soiled, folds small chips to spine head and foot, verso two small repairs; top edges a trifle dusty, board edges two small blemishes, corners gently bruised, small blemish to rear paste-down; internally fine.

¶   High Bonnet humorously describes the world of a somewhat caricatured Parisian chef and his origins.  From the dust jacket:
"[It] is an epicure's own odyssey, a picaresque romance of the haute cuisine.  Its hero is Jean-Marie Gallois who travels from Provence to the great kitchens of Paris, masters the culinary art at the Faison d;Or and the Roi Nantois, and does not lose his hauteur in Spain at the end of the book when bombs start to drop.  This is a rambling novel, Bellocian in its gusto for the wines and dishes of all parts of the world."

Welsh born, but resident in California for most of his life, Jones was a journalist and writer who published a number of works, many of them focused on California.  An accomplished cook renowned for his cordon bleu cuisine and efpicurean knowledge, Jones was active in various Californian food and wine societies. He maintained a lively correspondence with M  F  K  Fisher during his life.  Edgard Cirlin (1913-1973) was an artist and dust-jacket illustrator in the 1930s-1950s.

High Bonnet was a personal favourite of Anthony Bourdain and Ruth Reichl.  An excellent First Edition of one of the landmarks of gastronomic fiction.
