Octavo (230x145mm) rebacked cream, linen grain cloth spine, brown, gilt lettered spine label, publisher's original brown blind-stamped boards, viii,164,[4]pp : [A]4, B-L8, M4. Engraved frontispiece, title-page vignette, seven in-text woodblock engraved illustrations.  Professionally rebacked, new spine and endpapers; boards corners gently bruised; edges roughly trimmed; closed edge tear to pps 57-8 and 111-2; pages agetoned, lightly foxed; pps vii and viii reversed.

¶   Youatt was a respected British veterinary surgeon and writer of works on animal husbandry who also contributed to the periodicals the Veterinarian, and the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society.  His other works discussed cattle, horses, dogs and sheep.

There are 14 chapters on the breeds, husbandry and management of pigs.  Chapter 15 addresses butchering and pig-killing, pickling, bacon, curing, yields, and profits from pigs.  The recipes, printed longhand in the text provide instructions for the six classic cures.  A classic work on the pig, that ran to several editions in Britain and America and was translated into German.

Scarce.  A solid copy.
