Isabella Beeton was a British journalist, writer and editor.  In 1856, at the age of 21, having been educated in England and abroad, she married the upcoming publisher Samuel O Beeton who had made his initial fortune publishing Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.  She began her career as a writer making contributions to The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, a successful middle-class magazine and then various cookery columns in magazines and serials published by her husband.

Her major work,  The Book of Household Management was an amalgam of contributions from readers, extensive cribbing from significant authors such as Acton, Glasse, Raffald and many others and her own content.   Beeton's particular skill was as an editor, particularly in her plain and clear writing, helpful general instructions and the clear ordering of instructions.  Issued in parts between 1859 and 1861, the serial and then the book were extremely successful.

Beeton passed away in 1865 before completing a revised second edition.   The publishing rights were sold by her husband to Ward, Lock & Co shortly thereafter and a version has been in print ever since.

Imperfect, lacking two signatures and one colour plate.  Otherwise a nice early second edition.

§  OCLC records numerous holdings of various impressions of the second edition, most post-date this impression.
