London and Melbourne : Ward, Lock & Co, undated, circa 1949-1950¹. Printed by Butler & Tanner Ltd, Frome and London.

Demy Octavo (220x140mm) quarter bound, dark red waxed buckram, blindstamped spine, beige boards, all edges speckled red, xvi,1680,16pp : π⁸,A - 3G¹⁶, χ⁸.   Sixteen out-of-text, full page chromolithographic colour plates, sixty-four out-of-text full page monochrome plates, comprising approximately 350 illustrations.  As usual, lacks the plain printed dust jacket; spine faintly sunned; faint occasional foxing, mostly to the margins; else fine.

¶   An early post-war edition of the famed encyclopedic reference book on British household management, using a new collection of colour and monochrome plates², and updated to include domestic pressure cookers which became commercially available in Britain in 1949; pps 52-60 give detailed instructions for their use.  Chapters 51 - 60 cover international cookery.  Chapter 53, has approximately 80 'Australian' recipes, most repeated from earlier editions; some of which are unrecognisable as Australian, and others, that use indigenous ingredients such as Kangaroo, Barramundi, Trumpeter, Schnapper, Gill Birds, Parrot and Murray Perch; many of which were not regularly available in Australian urban households at the time.  Recipes for Bandicoot and New Zealand game included in the inter-war editions, have been removed.  The excessive recommended cooking times for vegetables remain a feature.

The identity of the editor(s) of this edition is unknown.  There are many small changes from earlier editions, however, Mrs Beeton's Household Management still contains the one recipe directly attributable to Isabella Beeton, albeit somewhat abridged, her Benevolent Soup at p.158.  The health and medical sections were completely rewritten to take account of the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948.

An excellent mid-century copy of the final 'major' edition of Mrs Beeton's The Book of Household Management.

§   OCLC records 15 holdings, mostly in the UK and USA; none in Australasia. Trove records one holding possibly this edition, State Library Queensland.

¹  p.1522 refers to legislation passed in 1949.
²  Warwick House, Ward Lock & Co's offices, print shop and archives including the illustrations from earlier editions were destroyed in 1940 during the Blitz.
