¶  Clarke began his career as a ship's bartender in 1926.  By 1939-1940, he was the head bartender of the American Bar at London’s Savoy having taken over from Harry Craddock.   After World War II, he was, for a while, the head bartender at the fashionable Albany Club in London.  In 1954, he opened his own establishment, the Albemarle Club in Mayfair graduating from bartender to nightclub owner. ¹ The Club closed in 1970.

Shaking in the 60's was Clarke's fourth and final cocktail book.  Billed as 'a complete guide to entertaining [for those] in the service of drinking.  Subjects covered include the mixing of all types of drinks, some 200 cocktail recipes; parties at home; storage, tasting, serving , and articles on wine." ²  Clarke's most famous recipe "The Comet" was created  to celebrate the first-ever  commercial flight of a jet aircraft; BOAC's de Havilland DH 106 Comet, from London to Johannesburg in May 1952.  The cocktail, featuring a South African liqueur is on p.87.
