¶ Worthington is an historic British brand of beer and save for Whitbreads, the oldest continuously brewed British beer brand extant today. The Worthington Brewery was established in Burton on Trent in 1744 and in the nineteenth century became famous for its White Shield bottle conditioned India Pale Ale. For much of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Worthington's was one of only three beers distributed nationally in bottle (the others being Bass and Guinness) and one of the very few beers to be bottle conditioned.
Issued just before the merger of the Worthington and Bass Breweries in the late 1920s, Things that Happen, is a delightful collection of humorous advertisements highlighting the every-day occasions one should have a Worthington. Grave and Shaw, the two main contributors, were both self taught cartoonists who excelled at drawing the working classes. In later years Grave was a relief artist for Punch.
Scarce. An excellent and rather amusing example of British interwar breweriana.
