FIRST ENGLISH EDITION

London: David Bogue, 1846. Printed in London, by J Unwin, Bucklesbury

Octavo (170x105mm) quarter bound calf, tan cloth, gilt lettered spine (erroneously dated 1866), new end-papers, xi,[1],339,[1]pp.  Approximately 70 engravings mostly of kitchen equipment.  A few very small signs of kitchen use, one or two faint signs of foxing and a small 5mm blemish to p.307,  overall a Near Fine copy in an elegant simple recent binding.

The scarce first English edition of Audot's best selling "La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville; ou, Nouvelle Cuisine Economique" translated from the 1846 Paris Edition; the 30th issued.   Likened in the preface to Mrs Rundell, Audot's work was immensely popular in France.  Interesting chapters include 'Cookery from the South of France including Provence and Languedoc' "Polish Cookery', 'Gothic or Ancient French Cookery' and 'English Entremets' (i.e. puddings).

§ Oxford, p.177. This edition not in Cagle, see Cagle 51-56 and Vicaire p.54-56 for French editions; see also Bitting, p.20 for the 1855 American edition.

OCLC records just two copies: Cambridge, National Library of Scotland.  There is some confusion with the similar title "French Domestic Cookery, combining economy with elegance, and adapted to the use of families of moderate fortune, by an English Physician." London, 1825; which this is not.
