The First Vines

South Yarra : Macmillan Art Publishing, 2006. First edition, Limited Edition #865/1000.  Preface by Lea Giles-Peters, State Librarian Queensland; foreword by Tate Adams; introduction by Len Evans; preface to the engravings by John Olsen.

Quarto (280x235mm)  burgundy cloth boards, gilt lettered spine, inset colour illustrated plate, 95,[1]pp. Forty-two engraved wood block prints.  Signed by Tate Adams on a 'Tate Adams" designed book plate to the front free end-paper.

The forty-two wood engravings featured were created by Tate Adams in the 1980s to record a selection of Australian vineyards which in the Bicentenary year of 1988 would celebrate 100 or more years of continuous  wine-making.   The unique proof edition of First Vines issued by the Lyre Bird Press in 1988 is held by the State Library of Queensland, from which this edition is produced.

Adams was an Australian print-maker and engraver.  Widely regarded as the 'Godfather' of contemporary Australian printmaking, Tate taught printmaking to many of Australia's greatest print-makers, including John Olsen, established print specialist galleries and founded and supported the Lyre Bird Press to print high calibre printed works including the proof original of this book.

A fine copy and a unique record of the first vines in Australia.
