STANKOWSKI, Anton (1906–1998).
Prost!
Stuttgart, 1996.
Two-colour serigraph (screenprint) on Fabriano paper, image 265 × 188 mm; sheet 378 × 270 mm. Printed in blue and red, with the white of the paper forming the unprinted areas. Signed and titled in pencil. Fine.
¶ A geometric composition depicting two glasses of red liquid brought together in a toast. The German Prost! is the familiar expression used when raising a glass. The work bears a striking visual relationship to Stankowski’s 1952 photogram of the same title, which depicts two brandy glasses tipped together in a toast. More than four decades later, Stankowski revisited the subject in a reduced graphic vocabulary, translating the forms of the glasses and the convivial gesture into an arrangement of colour and geometry. The work suggests a continuity of subject across two distinct media, from experimental photography to constructive screenprint.
Stankowski was a significant figure in the development of modern German graphic design. His practice encompassed photography, painting, printmaking and commercial graphics. His work explored the expressive possibilities of geometric form, colour and visual communication.
